3 Tiny House Habits....Weird Ones

Sure we all do quirky stuff every now and again, but I've developed some new weird habits thanks to living in a tiny house.

Bein' weirdos.

Panorama eye candy :)

Weird Tiny House Habits

Number One: At least a couple mornings a week, I “lock” the house- as I'm leaving and walking through the yard. I casually throw my arm back, with a halfway glance, point my car keys at The Pod and hit the lock button. I have never in my life done this anywhere else.
….Maybe it's because the tiny house is on wheels?

Karate CHOP!

Number Two:On weekend mornings, Dan and I often amuse ourselves for a good half hour, by “dancing” on the ceiling. I first discovered this fun activity while attempting to stretch my legs in bed. I was laying on my back and swung my leg up for a straighten and stretch. I was delighted to find that my lower extremities are just the right length to “stand” flat footed on the ceiling. Well, simply “standing” there didn't last long and we soon graduated to river dancing and fake fighting/duels.

No surface goes unused here, my friends.

Number Three: Glitchy transitions- here's one that's two fold. Dan and I each have our own hiccups as we switch from being at home in the tiny house and being out, working in the day to day world. I seem to throw a wide array of unrelated assignments onto different areas of the house. Sometimes I sit on the floor in the kitchen and read- other times, when I'm talking passionately about something, I find myself standing on the counter in the great room. My soap box perhaps? ;) And Dan- well, he forgets where modern plumbing exists. Just the other day, he was helping out at his Dad's store and went outside to toss a few things in the dumpster. Without thinking, he sauntered to the back of the lot and wizzed all over. (all over...haha inside joke) Half way through, the realization struck him like lightning- "I'm not in the woods- there is a toilet inside- this probably isn't appropriate..."   HA!

So are we the only two tiny house nuts with quirky habits? We'd love to hear from other tiny house people!

Thanks for reading!

    1. HA! I love it! I certainly can't get away with that where I am, but we plan to get land someday, and I hope to have the same privilege ;)

  2. This is awesome. Once, when I was home alone I locked myself out of the tiny house in the morning - naked! The lock on our door is the kind that the inside knob still turns even if it is locked. I learned that it was surprisingly easy to pry the screen off the window and because the house was small I could reach where I set my keys. We live deep in the woods in the middle of nowhere so it isn't unusual to go outside naked.

    1. lol, thanks for sharing Laura! I grew up in a rural area of Northern Maine where neighbors were miles apart. I definitely enjoyed some clothing free days. I miss it!

  3. That's so funny you should say that about the table! Our lil' bunbun's cage is under the table too! No leg space makes it awkward to use! We just sit in our chairs- I'm way too messy of an eater to trust myself in bed! haha!
PS: I plan to put up a FAQ page for a central info stop of sorts. Stay tuned!

    1. Hello, we have a basin that sits down into our counter (it was covered by the large cutting board in most photos of the kitchen). We have water in storage jugs. We heat hot water on the stove, put it in the basin- wash dishes, and then rinse them with hot water from our tea kettle. Rinsing happens over the basin too. When we are finished with the water, we dump it over our compost pile. We use only earth-friendly cleaning products. It's amazing how little water you really need to do dishes. We use maybe a gallon total to a days worth of dishes.

    2. Hi Vinny,
Thanks so much for reading! We have been interested in marketing models before- Dan and I have actually tried out about 5 different ones between the two of us. Congrats to you on your success! We couldn't seem to make any of them work for us however. We may be interested in the future, but right now we have quite a bit on our plates. Thanks again!

  7. You two are certainly getting a lot of home-building experience, I'll say that much!

I live in a tiny home too. It's called a Class C motorhome.

They start around $2500 and go up to $125,000!

Go to http://fleetwoodrv.com and click on Class C.

The advantage is they come already built for $10,000. That buys you a tiny palace on wheels. Plus, they have hot and cold running water and everything you need BUILT-IN already!

Oh, and for $10,000 you get an engine, too. So, you can move anywhere, effortlessly!

Go to Craigslist. See what sort of motorhome you can get for $10,000 in your area.

But, what you two are doing is great, I must say!

Make a children's room, for the child that you may want to have someday!

    Good luck to you both!

    Bye now!

    1. Hello! Thanks so much for reading- and yes, we have had a lot of people suggest an RV. It certainly makes sense in a lot of ways, but for us- we wanted to build something oursevles. We wanted that experience, the skill set, and the satisfaction of knowing you built your own home. Plus with building the tiny house, we paid the $10,000 sporadically over the course of 15 months- with an RV, we would have to pay up front or....get a loan...and that's something we wanted to avoid. We certainly plan to keep the tiny house when we finally build on the ground. Maybe it will be a play house for the kiddies or my own art studio!
